  9. The carbon dioxide "scrubbers" are actually canisters filled with lithium hydroxide crystals and charcoal. When carbon dioxide and lithium hydroxide come in contact with each other, they react to form two new substances: lithium carbonate (a solid) and water vapour (a gas).
